Toby Christensen at Third International Sound Healing Conference - Five Element Drumming

Toby Christensen will be presenting a workshop at the Third International Sound Healing Conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico USA, November 14-18, 2008.

“Change Your Rhythm and Change Your Life” is the foundation of Toby’s healing therapies, teachings and music. Known as The Healing Drummer, Toby is a recognized expert and innovator in the field of healing music. Part rock drummer/part ancient healer and a bundle of kinetic joyous energy, he uses the drum to create a force that disrupts unhealthy patterns and then combines elemental rhythms to restore and realign the mind, body and spirit. He travels across the country reaching thousands of people through his healing sessions, drumming circles, workshops, and interactive concerts.  A childhood drumming prodigy, he grew up playing in professional bands.

After becoming a pastor, he became disillusioned with the big business of religion. He found success as a senior executive for a major corporation and then as an entrepreneur with a successful line of coffee stores.

Toby then began intensive study in both Healing Drumming and Shamanism. He went to Africa to study with the Dagara of Burkina Faso. He also studied Native American Drumming at the Foundation for Shamanic Studies.

Toby has authored books and articles and recorded many CDs. He is the inventor of Sound Attunement Therapy. His latest therapeutic invention is the Crystal Healing Bed, an amazing construct of copper, crystals, and sacred geometry that intensifies the healing forces of the drum. Toby has just introduced the 5 Element Drumming DVD and CD where he teaches you how to use your drum as a tool of personal empowerment and sharing the meaning of the 5 Elements of the Dagara West African Medicine Wheel.

Toby's workshop "Five Element Drumming: Rhythms for Transformation" is on Sunday, November 16.

This workshop is an in-depth exploration of the ancient five elements of the African Dagara Medicine Wheel that will help you energize, empower and balance your life. Toby will explore in depth the teachings and rituals of each of these elements, as well as the specific drumming rhythms associated with each of these elements. Learn how each of us is inextricably linked to a certain element by birth, and how you can use this knowledge to balance your own energy and life.
Master the 5 Element Rhythms bringing balance and healing to your personal and professional life. Develop basic skills of drumming to facilitate the release of stress, increase relaxation and create new emotional patterns. Achieve balance and understand how harmful patterns affect an individual and how to implement simple exercises to immediately support healthy activity. Integrate the exercises and information into personal and professional lives, creating a happier and healthier lifestyle.

Kim Atkinson at Third International Sound Healing Conference: Embody Rhythm: Space, Time, Sound and Form

Kim Atkinson will be presenting a workshop at the Third International Sound Healing Conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico USA, November 14-18, 2008.

Kim Atkinson, percussionist, rhythm educator and evangelist, is the driving force behind PulseWave Percussion. Studying rhythm and the cultures that give it prominence has been one of the most significant currents in his life. Kim discovered African drumming while a psychology/natural science student at college. His encounter with Yoruba led him to study linguistics, ethnology, mythology, history, and perception along with music. Drumming and drum culture has invigorated Kim’s life and given him a clear direction and sense of fulfilling service. His educational releases include Mozambique, Clave Consciousness and Speaking of Rhythm.

Kim's workshop "Embody Rhythm: Space, Time, Sound and Form" is on Saturday, November 15.

You will use voice, movement, clapping and percussion instruments to learn eight basic combinations of triplet rhythm and how they expand into the 64 basic patterns that form the basis of good musicianship. You’ll be shown a simple matrix and we will spend most of the time in class playing, combining and deeply feeling the patterns. You will use body rhythm (sounds of feet, knees, chest, clap and snap) as your beginning sound palette and then move to other instruments as available. We will alternate between sitting and standing, foot taps and full body movement. These combinations are the same as the 64 combinations of the Chinese oracle "I Ching." This program will be 30 percent lecture and 70 per cent experiential.

Mental Heath Professionals: Drumming and rhythm-based therapy continues to receive more attention and use in the mental health field. My class is a user-friendly way to expand knowledge of rhythm, its processes and effects, as well as how to facilitate its use in various populations.

Learn to free the bodymind and expand the possibilities of improvisation and to realize and apply the information to individual musical situations.

Develop deeper understanding and feeling of rhythmic effects and patterns, expand knowledge of how and when to apply various patterns based on their effect on the body/mind, and improve musicianship by expanding the vocabulary of rhythmic patterns and learning about rhythms from other parts of the world and how they are used.

Chris James is a pioneer of Voice and Sound. His expertise is in the energetic qualities and effects of healing sound, song and meditation. A singer, musician, martial artist, monk and voice therapist, his CDs are played in prenatal courses, birthing suites, doctors' surgeries, hospital emergency wards, hospices and medical clinics. He is renowned for his ability to unite audiences of thousands in song and also facilitate intimate groups.

Chris' keynote is titled "Songs From the Inner Heart" on Tuesday, November 18.

Imagine if we TRULY loved the sound of our own voice. Over time we have shut down our listening because there is so much that we don't want to hear. When the imposed mind is bypassed we can connect to that part of ourselves that CAN hear and DOES sing in tune - the part of us that is truly free.

Chris facilitates your journey moving from the gentle breath meditation into stillness from where tone is formed. Everyone's voices emanate harmoniously merging into one connected sound.

Return to daily life with a new template of clarity informing our choices and how we live. Explore when we come 'into tune' naturally, creating harmony in our lives and releasing energetic blocks that have kept us disempowered, and discover how pure, simple sounds begin the journey into true joy and harmony with our natural voice. Realize that everyone has a beautiful voice.

Chris is also giving a workshop "The Healing Power of Esoteric Sound" on Tuesday, November 18.

Esoteric sound emanates the intelligence of the inner heart. Learn how to make sound from stillness and experience the joy, expansion and clarity it brings to all areas of life. Rediscover your natural healing voice, your gentle breath and all the potential it offers. The vibration of sound emanates an energetic quality and sends out information. Experience how this information is felt and received by the human body.

Discover what sound healing is and how it starts with our own inner awareness. Realize the effects our aural environment has on us. Develop the awareness to access our 'feeling' or intuitive body, returning us to our natural state of clairsentience. Release the physical, emotional and mental blocks which keep us from hearing, expressing and creating our lives in truth.

Tom Kenyon at Third International Sound Healing Conference: Sound of the Nagual

Tom Kenyon will be presenting both a keynote and a workshop at the Third International Sound Healing Conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico USA, November 14-18, 2008.

Tom Kenyon received his undergraduate degree in Communications and Speech and his Masters in Psychological Counseling. His post-graduate training is in Ericksonian Medical Hypnosis, Neuro Linquistic Programming and Whole Brain Learning.

Recognizing the power of sound, Tom began to compose music to deepen hypnotic states of awareness. As a result of his ten-year journey into Acoustic Brain Research he is considered a pioneer in the field of psychoacoustics—the scientific application of sound and music to affect the brain and psychological process.

Tom is the creator of over thirty psychoacoustic recordings that are used by clinicians and laypersons throughout the world. He is the author of several books and numerous articles and is an internationally acclaimed teacher and sound healer.

Tom's keynote is titled "Sound of the Nagual: The Use of Sound in Shamanic Healing" on Sunday, November 16.

In this program, Tom will discuss how sound is used in shamanic healing and journeying—particularly, how shamans use vocalization and indigenous instruments to alter perception. Through the lens of EEG studies and other research, he will explore how shamanic sound work shifts brain activity leading to profound altered states of consciousness.

Using this scientific platform as a foundation, Tom will talk about the phenomena that take place during shamanic states of awareness. Specifically, he will look at how sound alters brain activity affecting both physiology and perception. It is Tom's conviction that shamanic sound patterns alter the perception of time, and it is this alteration of perceived time that opens the doorway into shamanic states of awareness. He also believes shamanic sound work alters physiology in profound ways.

This is a multi-media and multi-cultural experience as Tom explores shamanic healing from many different perspectives-including those of psychoacoustics, neuropsychology, transpersonal psychology, comparative anthropology and ethnomusicology. The program will end with a live presentation of shamanic healing using a shamanic drum and Tom's nearly four-octave range voice.

Tom is also giving a workshop "The Portal: An Experience in Shamanic Sound Work" on Sunday, November 16.

In this program, Tom takes you into the world of shamanic sound work. This is a highly experiential event in which you can enter directly into the mysteries of the shamanic state. We will explore these states through the language of science and comparative shamanism. We will also look at how different shamanic traditions work with sound as a 'portal into the other worlds' and how this type of sound work alters brain activity. We will discuss and demonstrate the use of sound-codes in shamanic healing, allowing you to explore their mind-altering effects.

The idea of 'other worlds' from both the shamanic and transpersonal psychological perspectives will also be explored. This provides an intellectual approach that allows you to more easily enter into the shamanic experience-whether you believe the content of such experiences is real or symbolic.
In the last portion of this program, you are guided into a complete shamanic healing journey.

Nikolay Oorzhak & Vladislav Matrenitsky at Third International Sound Healing Conference

Nikolay Oorzhak & Vladislav Matrenitsky will be presenting three extraordinary events at the Third International Sound Healing Conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico USA, November 14-18, 2008.

Nikolay Oorzhak is a shaman from Tuva in southern Siberia, a virtuoso of throat singing, a healer, musician and recording artist. He is ex-Chairman of Tuvan shaman society Tos-Deer and has been a participant in several International Shamanic Congresses. He has years of healing practice at Central Shamanic Clinic in Tuva, where he completed his research work "Shamanic Practice in Combination with Healing Sound." While in India celebrating His Holiness the Dalai Lama's 60th birthday, he received the Dalai Lama's blessing for his healing work.

Nikolay acquired first prize at the First International Festival of Throat-Singing in Tuva. He is cofounder of ensembles "Tuva" and "Ertinelig Tuva." Nikolay expressed unique talent for jazz improvisation and has actually developed a new direction in ethno-jazz: "khoomei-jazz." He has five CDs to his credit and is author of Un-Hun System of Sound Healing, a rejuvenation and spiritual development based on ancient shamanic tradition of throat singing.

Vladislav Matrenitsky, MD, PhD is from Kiev, Ukraine, graduated from Odessa State Medical University, and was Senior Researcher of the Institute of Gerontology at the Academy of Medical Science of the USSR. His PhD was on the physiology and biochemistry of aging. Vladislav is a member of the International Scientific and Medical Network. He is an overtone and throat singer, recording artist and founder of Aum Center for Human Development that explores the ancient and modern sound technologies for spiritual development and healing. Vladislav is a disciple of Nikolay Oorzhak, doing research on the effectiveness of the Un-Hun System on health and longevity. Currently, Dr. Matrenitsky is his co-performer, manager and translator.

First, they're conducting a pre-Conference all-day retreat "Un-Hun: The Shamanic Throat Singing System for Healing and Personal Development" on Friday, November 14.

Un-Hun (the Sound of Sun) is a powerful sound-based system, developed by Nikolay Oorzhak through decades of his personal experience. It is based on Tuvan shamanic tradition and adapted for the western world by his disciple Dr. Vladislav Matrenitsky.

Through the practice of overtone sounds, one can find the basis for healthy and spiritual living. The Sound, being transformed into energy, spans the space of mind and creates the preconditions of initial contact with Spirit of Highest Power. Learn the basic sounds of Khoomei (throat singing), Kargyraa (roar) and Sygyt (whistle). They're used to activate the primordial power of human Soul and arouse the sources of life energy, enabling one to perceive and operate the sounds on thin levels. Activation of these sources (whirls of energy) lead to restoration of energy in associated body organs, particularly in pelvis area.

Nikolay and Vladislav also give a technique for developing resonance of nose and vocal cords, which harmonize and strengthen the voice, and exercises for restoration of balance of body and spirit. This program is a combination of lecture, sound healing demonstration, exercises, singing, discussion and question and answer.

Second, the two are giving a workshop "The Healing Power of Throat Overtone Sounds in Tuvan Shamanic Tradition" on Monday, November 17.

You will be introduced to the sound philosophy of Tuvan shamans and how it is interpreted by modern science. You will learn the shamanic views on human energy, Power of Spirit, Earth and Universe and how 'explosions' in consciousness lead to loss of balance in the body and development of diseases. The different styles of throat singing are introduced and their role in healing and self-development are explained. You'll see the importance of breathing and movement exercises in creating energy for sound. This program helps to improve energy movement in the body and lets you feel the power of your shamanic instrument –- the Voice.

And third, they're presenting an evening event "The Soul of Sound: A Voice Healing Ceremony Based on Tuvan Shamanic Throat Singing" on Tuesday, November 18.

We shall delve into the unique heritage of the South Siberian steppes and taiga –- throat or overtone singing. It is an ancient technique that allows a singer to produce simultaneously two or more musical sounds from their mouth. Admirers of ethnic and meditative music will have unforgettable impressions. We'll practice a wide range of sounds including a bird's warble to a yak's roar, which it would seem a man could not produce.

For centuries, Tuvan shamans have used this technique for immersing into altered states of consciousness and healing their patients. Accompanied by native Tuvan instruments, tungur (tambourine), igil (kind of violin) and homus (vargan), the ancient and modern shamanic songs create a deeply relaxing and meditative atmosphere giving the audience a chance to touch a real sacred art.

Richard Moss at Science and Consciousness Conference: "The Journey from self to Self"

Richard Moss will be presenting both a keynote address and a workshop at the Tenth International Conference on Science and Consciousness in Santa Fe, New Mexico USA, March 28 - April 2, 2008.

Richard Moss, MD is an international spiritual teacher and visionary thinker. He has guided students from all over the world into increasing spiritual maturity, helping people of many disciplines and backgrounds to honor their own essential spirituality and become more authentically and fully human. His work has inspired changes of consciousness in healthcare, business and teaching organizations. The teachings of Richard are a contemporary psychology of consciousness, that stands squarely in the lineage of the great wisdom traditions. He is the author of "The I That is We," "How Shall I Live," "The Second Miracle," "The Mandala of Being" and others.

Richard's keynote address on Monday, March 31 is "Conscious Evolution: The Journey from self to Self." Within each of us there are three fundamental levels of soul power. Most of us use only two, even when we have achieved the highest diplomas through conventional secular and religious education. The third, which is essential to true wisdom, remains more or less dormant. This is a discussion of how that third potential awakens, the power it bestows, and the wisdom path we can then begin to live.

Richard will also be offering on Monday a workshop titled "The Mandala Approach: A Powerful Tool for Healing and Self-Knowledge and Healing." Mandalas are symbolic tools for understanding and reconciling the dualistic nature of mind. In this experiential workshop, with demonstrations using audience volunteers, Richard teaches his Mandala of Being. He shows how we lose connection to our true selves by constantly fleeing the Now into thoughts that create our psychological world of past, future, subject (me), object (you). This lack of presence results in predictable emotional suffering: fearfulness, anger, guilt, depressiveness, and grandiosity. Learning to return to the Now invites our higher emotional functions, such as gratitude, compassion, forgiveness and humility to arise spontaneously.

Special note: Richard will be a guest on Andrea Adler's internet radio show next week. It will air Monday night, March 24th at 9:00 pm ET, 7:00pm MT, and 6:00pm PT. The topic for March 24th will be: "The Business of Consciousness." Her guests will be Dr. Richard Moss and Lynda Leonard, program director for The Message Company. Andrea's show, "Marketing as a Spiritual Path," introduces a broad range of interviews, discussions and insights as to how we can bring holistic / spiritual methodologies into our lives and into our businesses; how we can create an outreach that has integrity–while being profitable and sustainable. Other esteemed presenters at the conference include Guy Finley, Angela Browne-Miller, Steven Greer, Richard Moss, Olga Kharitidi, Peter Russell, Leonard Shlain, Brooke Medicine Eagle, Rupert Sheldrake, Hank Wesselman and many others.

"This conference has been a wonderful experience for me. I can't recall a single conference where I went to more sessions and stayed longer in my life. The Message Company has gone to great trouble in assembling quite remarkable human beings." – Don Beck, PhD, author, Spiral Dynamics

"I am asked to present at a wide variety of conferences throughout the world and I usually stay to hear what other presenters have to say. I must say that of them all, I look forward the most to the Science and Consciousness Conference because it has the highest quality of interesting speakers that bring an expertise to their presentations that is most stimulating. I always learn something new and amazing with which to regale my friends when I return home." – Leonard Shlain, MD, author, The Alphabet vs. the Goddess
