Benefits of Recycling
In 1995, Signal Mountain Cement Co. of Chattanooga, Tennessee replaced the main fuel sources for their cement kilnscoal and petroleumwith a seemingly endless resource: used automobile and truck tires. The tires have a higher fuel content per pound than conventional fuels and combust at higher teperatures, resulting in a more complete burn with virtually no emmisions.

In addition, Signal Mountain no longer has fuel costs, but is now getting paid to use their new fuel source in the form of a “tipping fee” paid by the recycling companies for accepting the tires for disposal. Tennessee currently produces about 6 million used tires yearly, about six times more than the company can use. 10/98

Greener Travel Policies
There is growing interest among corporate travel buyers in integrating environmental factors into their purchasing criteria, much as many companies already do in other aspects of procurement. For example, the U.K.-based Institute of Travel Management recently issued a Business Travel Environmental Code of Contracting to help members incorporate environmental criteria into their purchasing decisions.

Lynne Bicknell, former European Travel Manager for Salomon Smith Barney, who created the code, hopes to see an audited industry standard “so that purchasers know if a travel industry supplier has achieved certain environmental standards.” 5/99
